Racing Titbits

MARCH 2008

Highlight of this month’s and possibly the full N.H. Season is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, for there seems a good chance that we will see a "Flying Star", and Phil Nicholls’s entry for the occasion might even win "hands down".

Kauto Star has already won the event and his last success at Newbury received tremendous applause for despite his prohibitive price racegoers as a whole, love a horse that’s got class and this one has certainly has it.

But here is the crunch – its price for the big race is going to be very short, so short that only a gambler could profit from backing it. So perhaps the best bet for the everyday betting shop punter is to try and sort out an entry that is a decent each-way bet.

Let’s face it, at least having a bet in the race that way must incline the backer to watch the race, come the day. In fact it could be a two-way winner, for if you win then its been a good bet and if you lose and Kauto stars, then you still have to marvel at his success.

A DELVER INTO THE 4-DAY SYSTEM

I HAVE received a letter from a well-known Handicap Book reader of the past called Ron Wilson, who has been delving into the N.H. 4-Day System for several years and I reprint part of the letter received which to me sounds good advice to any systemite and append it below:

It has been a long time since I last wrote to you, so I thought that you being more than just an interested party, might like a copy of my updated stats for the late Philip Alexander’s Four Day Flat System according to Wilson.

The original system was to back all Geldings that were last time out winners at a Group One course running again within Four Days at a Group One court.

My amendments exclude those horses running again at the same course, horses running their second race in a small field, less than ten runners, 2 and 3 Year olds and last time out winners at Doncaster and Newcastle. The reasons are outlined later in this letter.

In the 13 June 2007 issue of the ‘Update’, Graham Wheldon published, in the Forum, my letter updating the Jumps and Flat results for both Four Day Systems.

Some Weeks later, a response from Dave. H, was printed in the Forum, that accused me and one other of ‘Back Fitting’ results to increase profits. I wrote a second letter to Graham which he decided not to publish in the Forum.In that letter I put it to Dave~H that he had not understood what he had read and that he should read my article again and if he still didn’t understand what was written then he should read it again and again until he did.

In that article I stated that at the end of the 2002 FIat season, I had researched the results for the three seasons that followed the publication of Philip Alexander’s Four Day method in the Update of the 18 March 2000 along with the Runners, Winners and profit made for the 1999 Flat season.

The system produced two winning seasons from the three, a combined total of 10 winners from 38 runners and a profit offl £15.55 to a £5 win level stake. What I did, and what Davey H. calls Back fitting’, was to investigate the 28 losers, in an effort to identify anything that they might have in common, and in that event, to remove them from the system and thereby increase the strike rate and profit without, hopefully, not throwing too many babies out with the bath water,

Racing Titbits Page 2 (4 DAY FLAT SYSTEM)

Research showed that a high proportion of those losers fell into five categories;

7 losers from 8 runners were in small fields (Winner was a 6-5 (Fav)

9 losers from 10 runners running again at the same course (Winner was a 2-l (Fav)

3 losers from 3 runners won their first race at Newcastle

3 losers from 3 runners won their first race at Doncaster

3 losers from 3 runners were 2 or 3 years old

Three remaining losers showed up in profitable areas

I continued working the full system throughout the 2003 season but kept a close eye on those areas showing above and what a season that turned out to be.

The full System produced five winners from 10 runners and a profit off £135.75 to a £5 win level stake. The amended system produced three winners from just four runners and a profit £150.00 to the same level stake.

After the 2003 season I decided to discontinue following the full system and to back only those runners indicated by the amended system.

Philip Alexander stated, on more than one occasion, that too much faith should not be placed on just one season’s results, and just how right that comment turned out to be, is clearly shown when you look at the sample results published for a very profitable 1999 season.

The profit for that season was reduced by £64.35, when using the amended system but the total profit for the last nine seasons was increased by £102.20.

The 2005 season was the first to losing one for the amended system and was closely followed by a loss for the 2006 season. The average number of runners doubled in 2005, which coincided with the closure of Ascot due to the building of the new stand.

Ascot features strongly in the results over the nine seasons. Three LTO winners at Sandown went on to win at Ascot and of the four LTO winners at Ascot, three went on to win at Goodwood.

The two LTO winners at Sandown in 2005 both lost their next race, the first Sandown winners to do to, but that was not to be the only 100% strike rate to go that season. Clear favourites had a 100% strike rate up until 2005 when Attorney decided not oblige when made 3-1 favourite at Goodwood, also, all three runners that ran their second race at Goodwood also lost.

++++++++++++

Ron of course, sent me full details of all his up-to-date stats which I leave out for obvious reasons. But anyone whishing to get in touch with Ron should drop me an e-mail and I will contact Ron to see if he is interested.

++++++++++++++

And following Ron’s excellent piece of work a reminder that I along with Jim Streek, Philip Alexander and Bryan Cottam wrote the "Time Lapse & 4,5,6 & Days System and any one applying for a copy this month only can get it for £5.

Bookies Losing?

The Levy board has reduced its prizemoney contribution from £55\million this year to £49.5m in 2008, the result of the continued bookmakers reduction in the profits they have made on racing.

The Levy peaked at £102m in 2003-04.
